Remember that old idea of stick built homes? Hours on end of labor, constant repairs, and low energy efficiency? Those are a thing of the past. Structurally insulated panels, also known as SIPs, have been around for decades, but seem to be just gaining popularity in more recent years. SIP panels consist two boards made of various materials (oriented strand board, sheet metal, plywood etc.) and a foam core sandwiched between them. The panels are then connected by another material depending on the manufacturer.
Why should you consider this rather than building your home the traditional way? These may cost a little bit more on the initial purchase, but not only will they save you money on the construction of your home, they will save you money for the many years to come. Structurally insulated panels are stronger, more energy efficient, more air tight, have less waste, and as previously stated will save you onsite costs.
